There is so much to share, so many experiences to have. Without that safe place to share openly with one another, the feeling of comfort in the family goes away.
There are parents who push and insist that their children adopt their singular vision of the world. There often is much friction between these parents and their children. There is obedience by fear not by love… if at all. This very nature of struggle has many children dreaming of the time they can escape and leave permanently. All the resources the parents invested will be lost when the children flee. (not to mention all the battles and hurt feelings of adolescence)
With a more open line of communication, parents can and often do learn from their children as they grow. It is a two way street. Children have to know how to respectfully communicate their feelings and ideas so they’re heard. It is an art and skill they learn from their parents (as well as any other influencing adults in their lives). Parents can elicit information from their children that can help them fine tune their methods of communicating.
The ideal family has unlimited communication. Not in the sense of they speak all the time nonstop… but in the sense that they can speak their minds and share ideas without fear of recrimination or negative consequences. There is clearly a time and place for all things, but the ideal family can handle anything because they can talk about anything with each other.
Not just the small unit of family, but any community
This concept of open communication is so important that many companies insist that leaders and managers support and encourage open communication. The phrase “over-communicate” sometimes gets thrown around to emphasize the need for people to talk to each other and support one another clearly and with transparency and authenticity.
Any community, like the church, school, hobby clubs, etc… benefit from unlimited data communication plans. People have to be comfortable talking to each other. This is the type of environment that fosters growth, idea sharing, and adaptability to life. (sure, well oversimplified)
In a way of thinking, that is what the right to free speech is all about. The ability to communicate one’s ideas freely without fear of any harm due to speaking up one’s mind. let’s not forget the whole idea of respect, love, tact, politeness, and wisdom in this discussion of free speech
