Now that I know, now what?

Once you have a look into how you function in terms of beliefs, doing something about that is just as important as getting to know what’s what.

Discovering that you love gossip is one thing.

Deciding that gossip at a high level is not helping is another.

Making efforts to give up the gossip is a whole different story.

Goals

This is where having some goal in mind comes in handy. What kind of service do you want to be involved with? Do you want to spread the word of God? Do you want to leave a positive legacy on your children? Do you want to be a better life partner? Do you want to make an impact on your community?

As you better understand your mission in life, your purpose, your ideals, your values, your direction, it becomes easier to decide what to do about your belief system. And in the context of service, you can better frame your habits of choice to support that ideal.

Two basic examples.

First, David wanted to serve God. He focused his mornings on meditation with the Lord. He put his talents to great use in the fields taking care of the flock in his trust. He did not let harm come to them, because his belief was that they were God’s creation that he had to manage to his best ability.

When Goliath challenged the people of Israel, it was a no-brainer that action would be necessary. David sought to empower others to do their work of defending the nation.

When that didn’t work, he sought to galvanize the leadership into action.

And when that failed, under the inspiration of God, he opted to go and handle the giant himself.

His belief was steeped in the stewardship of the Lord mindset. The result, God used David mightily.

Second example, many parents say that they are all about their children. Their actions show otherwise. They work late, often the first to pick up overtime at work. They bring work home. They select friends that will help promote them up the ladder of work.

Yet, they won’t go to PTA, they won’t stay up a few extra minutes to talk to their children. And then, they’re shocked if they’re accused of not being family minded and focused. Had their true belief been about the family, the choices made would reflect that.

Many family focused parents have passed up on promotions that would take them away from home. Some have even started businesses that they run from home to ensure they’re home when their children are home. They’ve passed on cable so that their kids aren’t bombarded by media’s messages that conflict with their values.

The bottom line, it takes effort to build bad habits and it takes effort to build good habits. Make it a priority to shift towards the values you cherish.

Live in transparent authenticity is how a preacher once put it. Living in harmony with your beliefs is the greatest service you can do for others. Now they know who you are, no duplicities or lies. Just the genuine you. Think of all the headaches and games avoided if people just were themselves.
