Don’t Get Passed Over

God passed up the brothers because they stopped being ready for their blessings. They stopped being ready for God’s call. They stopped being ready to depend on God. So, their chance at royalty leadership was passed over straight down to David. The little guy who was in the field working his craft while the others were lavishing the prophet with praise at the banquet at home. David never stopped being himself, not even to party.

The return on David’s investment was blown up exponentially by God’s favor. He went from being a simple shepherd boy to a king to God’s “man after my own heart” person. That’s insanely huge returns on investment.

How does this tie into service?

When you invest in yourself, you position yourself to better invest in others. While it’s easy to conclude that you must first get great to help others, keep in mind that helping others is not a function of how great you are. It’s a function of how willing you are to help others. It’s very possible for a person on a cardboard box with no home to live to help a rich wealthy person in a Rolls Royce find their way. Think about it. If they’re lost navigating around a town they don’t know, and they’ve forgotten their GPS in the hotel, that homeless person who knows how to point them in the right direction is priceless. In great service.

Start investing in others now as you work on investing in yourself. It doesn’t cost you much to smile, say hello, hold a door. It doesn’t hurt you to refrain from cursing someone out. It doesn’t hurt you or cost you much to ask someone how they’re doing. The efforts is an investment in yourself and others. In time, you’ll get better at it. In time, the rewards will come your way in predictable and also unknown ways.

God will work with someone in motion over someone who is standing still. He will work with someone who is standing still over someone who is moving backwards (rebellion against him). He will work with someone moving backwards over someone who flat out denies him. God will work with anyone open to working with him. He greatly pours out blessings on those who take that call, because there is much to be done.

Is your service hindering or helping?

David’s return on investment is well outside his comprehension. Today, we still talk about David and his exploits. He has no idea how many lives are changed by his story of his win over the giant. That’s the same for you. You’ve no way of knowing how many lives will change for the better because you agreed to be of service to someone. The returns will be far greater than you can imagine. And this cuts both ways. Stay harmful to others, and the damages is just as far reaching. Praise God he can mitigate your damages.

Wrapping Up

Dear reader, as you conclude reading all these words on your screen, please be encouraged. The mind is very adaptable. It will learn a lot of things. You can learn to improve yourself. You can learn from others, books, experiences, and life. The choice to hinder or serve is yours. Go out and make the world a better place for you, your family, your friends, etc. But more importantly, be of service because service is it’s own reward.
